Finally, if you acknowledge Shoshone as a liminal space to work through and address your problems in peace and the fire as a symbol that Shoshone is no longer necessary since all the characters have acknowledged and addressed their problems, you also acknowledge that Henry and Delilah no longer need each other. And beyond that, for them to meet means ending the liminal, almost dreamlike state of the game and coming into the reality of what they just experienced, which I think neither of them desires. To end the game with Henry and Delilah meeting defeats the point - it rewards the act of running away from one's problems when the rest of the game is specifically around the bad things that happen when you run away from your problems rather than addressing them. Henry comes to terms with Julia's dementia and intends to return to her. Delilah hints that she intends to give up drinking. Ned Goodwin comes to terms with his son's death and (presumably) remains in Shoshone to die in the growing fire, accepting his own death. It represents that the characters within the park have come to terms with their problems and failures and are ready to move on, hence, Shoshone is no longer a necessary part of their lives. Shoshone becomes a symbolic in-between a liminal space where you remain until you're ready to move on. And yet, characters within the story attempt to run away from all of those things rather than turning around and facing them, all to disastrous results. There are some things you can never escape from - the death of your son, your wife's early dementia, your unrequited love, your alcoholism. Firewatch is about running away from things that you can't run away from, and what happens when you try. The only ending that rings true is for Henry to go back and face what's happening to Julia and deal with how he feels, not just try to escape from reality.Įxactly. He was already slipping into alcoholism before taking the Firewatch job. I believe that, were Henry to run off with Delilah, his guilt over "abandoning" Julia would destroy him. People with empathy and love for someone else can't act like this. He may be able to focus solely on Delilah to forget about Julia, but it's such a false narrative. But then Henry would have successfully ran away from his problems. So how should Henry's story end? Well, Henry could have met up with Delilah and run off to have an affair. It may also apply to Ron, who cared enough about Dave to sing a song for him and who later broke up with Debbie, but that is unclear.Dave's unrequited love for Ron tortured him, so he drowned his emotions in beer while listening to Ron's recording of "Ol' Shoshone." (Trust me, I've been there.).Ned Goodwin is running away from his guilt over his son's death. But, just like in real life, he couldn't run away from himself and his emotions. ![]() Henry took the job to run away from his life, because the pain of losing Julia was too much for him to bear. Henry is alone throughout the game: Julia is relegated to a photo (where we can't see her face), Delilah is located across a chasm, Brian Goodwin is dead in a cave, Ned Goodwin is invisible, and the teenager girls are far off in the distance. But this is exactly the theme of the game. The ending is a "Sorry Mario, but the princess is in another castle" scenario: Delilah isn't at her lookout and Henry is left alone once again. In fact, I think that the climactic ending would be horrible. I agree that, while it feels anticlimactic, it's actually the perfect ending. ![]() ![]() While I really liked them, they all mention how Firewatch has an anticlimactic ending. I've watched a few (excellent) YouTube videos discussing Firewatch. This involves talking about the ending, so beware of spoilers!
